Lily froze at the knock. Dead on eight oâclock, Daniel arrived. On time. No surprise. Still shaking, she ditched the tea towel and her apron into a drawer under the kitchen bench. Fixing a smile on her face, she took a couple of deep breaths and opened the door. âHi.â
Dressed in denim jeans and a black t-shirt moulded to his impressive pecs, Daniel filled the doorway, wine in hand. The leather jacket she had borrowed more than once completed the perfect picture. Always relaxed and confident, she loved the way his grin crinkled the corner of his eyes.
âThanks.â Concerned he would notice her trembling fingers, she squeezed the neck of the bottle tight.
One eyebrow raised, head cocked to the side, he hung onto it a fraction longer than necessary. The man missed nothing. She admired the label. âImpressive. A cork. One giant leap from the plonk living in my fridge.â
âI hope you enjoy it.â He shrugged and shuffled his feet. Hard to believe Daniel wasnât used to compliments. âAre you going to invite me in?â
âSure, but no judging. I havenât finished cleaning.â As the door closed, a chill blasted through her. Pete may still be out there, watching. âHave a seat. Dinnerâs nearly ready.â She swept her hand towards the sagging sofa and checked the simmering pan.
âSmells wonderful. Corkscrew?â
âYes, that drawer there.â
She almost dropped the spoon when Danielâs arm swung across her shoulders, pressed a full glass to her lips. It smelled divine, earthy strawberries, if that was even a thing. âMmm, delicious, thanks.â
Astute and funny, the best man sheâd ever met sat on the stool opposite, watching her stir soup. His perfect, kissable lips smiled as she played master chef. End it now. Pete meant what he said. Lily sniffed. As soon as dinner was over and Daniel left, sheâd call Kate and bring her trip forward. She could kick herself for not doing it earlier.
âI hope you like Minestrone. Itâs simple but tasty. One of Peggyâs recipes.â
âPeggy? Was that your mother?â
âNo. After we lost mum, I mentioned, dad hired Peggy to run the house, our lives. While he built his business, she travelled with us, fed me, made sure I went to bed at a sensible hour. When we were stuck in the middle of nowhere, she stepped in as home schooler.â
âI see.â
Daniel didnât say any more, even though she could sense lorry load of questions tucked behind his arched brow. She twirled her motherâs locket. âI bet you think Iâm a spoiled brat. Itâs true, I grew up not wanting anything, never worked for pocket money.â
âInteresting.â
âThere you go again. I donât believe you sneak up on the enemy. I can hear your brain ticking, working overtime. Making assumptions.â
âApologies. Nothing personal. Itâs a professional habit, gathering intel. Mind readingâs another.â
Interrogation time? Great. Her plan to have fun debating the benefits of dark over milk chocolate melted into another uncomfortable moment.
âCome, sit with me for a second. Soup can wait.â The deep tone of his voice drew her, boneless, to his side.
